A look back at Week 6 of the college football season.

Well, Week 6 certainly was a crazy one with a bunch of upsets, great games, awful calls, etc. The powers that be need to find a way to spread these games out so we do not have a bunch of dud weeks followed by this, but it certainly was a great day to be plopped onto the couch for 14 hours.

1. The weekend got off to a fast start Thursday night with the Arizona Wildcats moving to 5-0 with an upset of the Oregon Ducks. I had a feeling the Ducks may be in trouble due to their defensive lapses and vegas setting an over under of 77, so I said…. Oregon’s defense has been vulnerable and Arizona is scoring points averaging 42 a game. … Read More »

Week 6 2014 Preview – Pondering the Future

Random thoughts on the upcoming weekend of college football.

Finally a Saturday slate of games worthy of 12 hours on the couch. We have suffered through some bad weekends but this weekend should make up for it. There are 6 games between Top 25 teams, so let’s get right to it.

1. The weekend gets going Thursday night with 5-0 Arizona traveling to Eugene to face the also unbeaten Oregon Ducks. Oregon’s defense has been vulnerable and Arizona is scoring points averaging 42 a game. They are going to need to at least match that if they hope to pull off the upset as they did last year winning 42-16. Over under on this game is 77 so points should come early and often. So look for a 10-3 halftime score.

2. The SEC has … Read More »

A look back at Week 5 of the college football season.

1. I was high on UCLA entering the season, picking them to go to the playoff. I seriously reconsidered after seeing their first two games of the year. But Thursday night was a statement win. Perhaps I was too early to write them off. The next two weeks will tell with Utah and Oregon ahead. Mr. Hundley is going to need to play like he did Thursday for the Bruins. He is capable of it, so the Rose Bowl should be excited if it is unbeaten Oregon versus unbeaten UCLA.

2. Florida State struggled against NC State and giving up 41 to the Wolfpack does not seem like a good thing, but I am not off the Seminoles making the playoff. … Read More »

Analysis from a Jets Fan – MNF Debacle

Analysis from a Jets Fan – Monday Night Football Debacle 9-22-2014

They say you feel better when you write things down that you are upset about, so I’m quite surprised I never did this before being a die hard New York Jets fan. I should have written books by now. We have struggled thru many (every) seasons as fans; a fan base that exudes hopeless optimism during preseason and then gradually, slowly, and painfully, gets deflated during the season like a helium balloon does overnight. Yes, credit us Jet fans for having tons of passion, and above all, loyalty, tour team. There are no bandwagon fans here at all. This is the least likely joined fan base.  And no one is leaving; it’s a disease and/or an addiction. You know it’s bad for you and will ultimately kill you, but you … Read More »

A look back at Week 4 of the college football season.

I will admit that I did not see very much college football this weekend. My job took me to Denmark over the weekend and while you can generally find NFL football in Copenhagen, college football is impossible. I did manage to watch the Gators not be able to play offense or defense but that is about it.

1. The dedication award goes to me. I did the impossible and was able to watch the Gators. This was an epic quest that had me sitting behind the reception desk at my hotel, using an impossibly slow WiFi connection, slingbox, VPN, and iPad to watch the Gators ineptitude. That game should have been 72-0. Alabama alone kept Florida in this game. If Florida … Read More »

Week 4 2014 Preview – Pondering the Future

Random thoughts on the upcoming weekend of college football.

1. The weekend gets off to a fast start on Thursday with the Auburn Tigers traveling to Manhattan, Kansas to take on the Kansas State Wildcats. This is one of two games between top 25 teams and it is in prime time on Thursday night. Both teams come in 2-0. Auburn’s easy week 1 win over Arkansas looks even better after Arkansas shredded Texas Tech. I still am not sure what to make of this Wildcat team. I guess we find out Thursday. Bill Synder Stadium should be rocking for this one.

2. On Friday, UConn takes on South Florida in Tampa. Unfortunately for the Bulls, there are probably 10 high school games within 5 miles of Raymond James that will be better … Read More »

A look back at Week 3 of the college football season.

1. Ok, I was wrong. The schedule appeared light, but three Top 25 teams lost to unranked opponents; USC, Virginia Tech, and Louisville. Additionally, UCLA barely escaped against a down Texas team. Further, the only match-up of Top 25 teams was a good one as South Carolina beat Georgia. I think both of those teams have some work to do on defense. I believe that I wrote…I don’t see any other game where a Top 25 team is challenged with the possible exception of East Carolina at Virginia Tech. Not exactly on the nose, but I did allude to one of the upsets, so at least there is that.

2. Did Vanderbilt really have to rally with two TD’s in the 4Q, the second coming with … Read More »

Random thoughts on the upcoming weekend of college football.

1. If you thought last week’s schedule was light, check out this week. Only one game between Top 25 teams…Georgia at South Carolina. I don’t see any other game where a Top 25 team is challenged with the possible exception of East Carolina at Virginia Tech. Not good. Maybe it is a good weekend to score some points with the significant other….nah, bad games are still better than the mall.

2. Syracuse at Central Michigan – First, how is this game in Mt. Pleasant? Second, would you believe that these teams enter the game undefeated. Yup, it is true. That is about the only thing about this game that I find intriguing.

3. Massachusetts at Vanderbilt – One of these … Read More »

Off The Beaten Path – my Trip to Toronto, Canada

Off The Beaten Football Path – Trip to Toronto, Canada……..Canada you say???

Exactly! What business do I have going up to Canada on a college football weekend and the first NFL Sunday you ask??? RIOTFEST!!! That’s right, I took my old sorry ass up to RiotFest not to watch the new, up and coming bands, but to see an older favorite, The Cure!! Really it is my wife’s favorite, not mine. A little too depressing for me and weird, but I was there none the less. Pleasantly surprised with how well they sounded; new and old material. Good concert!! We saw a few other bands; Flaming Lips, Brand New, and Rage Against, and were pleasantly surprised enough to decide to buy their albums once we return home! Anyway, let’s review the trip….

A 9AM flight out of my favorite LaGuardia terminal (American … Read More »

1. I thought I was off to a good week, with the UTSA Roadrunners taking the Arizona Wildcats to the wire as I expected. Arizona was fortunate to get the win in this game. I still am waiting to understand how UTSA got this game at home.

2. The Pitt Panthers can run the ball…very well. They will be a force in the ACC Coastal, especially since North Carolina is not as good as I thought, at least at this point in the season. The Coastal is clearly the step sister to the Atlantic, but Pitt will make noise if they continue to run the ball this well.

3. The Cornhuskers got very lucky to beat McNeese State. If only the Cowboys could tackle with their arms instead of shoulders, that game was in … Read More »

Bold Predictions For 2014 – 1st Follow-Up    9/8/2014

Here’s my first follow-up to my predictions:

Charlie Weis has won a game. Hooray!!!  Now clearly it wasn’t against a mighty powerhouse like Kansas State (he he ha ha), but he did manage a “W”, which was important being he has impossible games the rest of the way (can’t believe Duke is an impossible game). Sure the game this past weekend against Orville Reddinbochers School of Growing Better Popcorn, but they did win, and the game was over at halftime in convincing fashion. The problem was they let them climb back in, all the way to an onside kick with under 2 minutes left. Too close, no finish, poor coaching. Still on target for September 29th where he will have a tee time on the Blue Course at Doral. I just can’t see … Read More »
